• That is correct. Because you are using the audio jack, it takes over the entire audio pipeline and so you cant hear audio. To be able to monitor output while taking in input, you'll likely need more sophisticated offerings.

• Unfortunately MacBook Airs do not have TRRS inputs on their headphone port. It will not work with a MacBook Air. There is no way to input a mic of any kind to a MacBook Air unless you use a USB mic, or have an audio interface.
