“When plugged in, I am getting an error message that this drive is not readable by my MAC (running MAC OS Sierra). What gives? This is supposed to be formatted for MAC. Thanks.”

Hi, It must be a problem with either the Drivers or The NTFS Filesystem, just format this drive as MacOS Filesystem or ExFat, then you will be able to fully make use of it. You're Welcome :)
