Portable back ups are the best right now. you can get a 2 TB for less than $100. The ones with power adaptors are a thing of the past.

The larger desktop drives tend to have their own power source due to the fact that they have larger drives that spin at faster RPMs and consume more power. For a laptop a portable drive is perfect especially if the portable drive will be used on the go. Hope this helped.
