• Don't know about Mac, but it was ready to use, just like any other USB thumb drive.

• I partitioned it easily on my Mac with Disk Utility. Then you have the option to format each partition either for Mac or Windows (FAT or ExFAT) . If you want NTFS or another Windows format, move the disk to the Windows machine and format the Windows partition(s).
