This will work for time machine. Connect it to your mac and tell Time Machine to use it as a backup drive. The system will then handle reformatting it to the correct settings for you. I just went through this myself. Don't think about using this as anything BUT time machine if you configure it that way. MacOS does not allow you to use a Time Machine drive for anything other than time machine. There may be some that tell you that you can partition it and use a portion for other things my MacOS is happiest when it can control the whole drive for Time Machine backups
