• the first question i must ask is: is it a ps4 or a ps4 pro? the regular ps4 has 2 usb port on the front only one of them can run a portable external hd if i remember right it will be the one that is closer to the side of the machine. now the pro has a external hd (usb) port on the back it was put there for just such a device (to keep the front neat) or you can use the front port (the same one as the non pro). i hope this helps

• Make sure you are plugged into the back port. Then format it in settings. Mine was very simple as a plug and play.
