These bulbs require the hub in order to be controlled. However, 1 hub can control 60 bulbs. If you don't want the hub you can always go with this bulb: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sengled-a19-wi-fi-smart-led-bulb-white-only/6320348.p?skuId=6320348 This bulb connects directly to your Wi-Fi without the hub. The reason to go with one or the other depends on how many you plan to deploy. The breakeven point at current prices ($40 hub+2 bulbs and $10 for each additional vs $15 each for the hub free version) is 6 bulbs. If you plan to do more than 6 - go with the hub. Less than 6 - go with the hub free version. I currently have 11 bulbs controlled by my hub and plan to add more (I started with 3 bulbs 7 months ago).

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The hub is required for most of the Sengled bulbs, except for the A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Bulb. Though, that bulb has limitations because it can't be too far from the router. I forget how many feet it could be. It was something like 10 feet. With the hub and their other smart bulbs, you don't have that issue. Plus it's much faster and easier to link the bulbs. I purchased both and no matter what they have to be set up with the Sengled app. The wifi bulb had a ton of issues connecting. The bulbs with the hub was super easy to set up. You just connect the app to the hub (which is connected to your router and plugged into an outlet) and then the hub automatically detects all Sengled lightbulbs that are plugged in. From there, you can set them up in the Alexa app to be detected.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You still need the hub because you have to set up the Sengled app first. Once you set up the app, you then have to pair it with Alexa and it’s a complicated process.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The hub is required if you do not have an Alexa device with a built-in hub. You have to specifically purchase an Alexa with a hub built-in, otherwise, you'll need the Sengled hub. The lights do not work on your wifi network, but on the network supplied by the hub itself. To me, this is preferrable, so that I don't have a bunch of IoT devices clogging up my WiFi.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I was told you needed the hub to be able to control the lights over the WiFi and with multiple echos. And it’ll help control which lights do what and where
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Hub is not necessary because you can buy the individual sengled WiFi lightbulbs. But having a hub I think is better for keeping all your lights connected especially in a house or a large apartment because it helps extend the reach to router connection if you use the WiFi mode instead of wired and put it closer to the bulbs that wouldn’t be able to connect to router connection. The lights in general are very useful. You can set them on a timer so you never forget to turn of the lights. Hope this helped!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Sengled Control hub is required for installation of any Sengled product; though using Alexa/Echo is available to connect to the Sengled Home App. Simply pair the device and - Wa-Lah! - you’re good to go. Hope this helps. IB
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I originally thought I could just use Alexa as well to control the bulbs. However, you do need the control hub as that is what communicates with Alexa. The bulbs themselves are not quite smart enough. I was not able to discover the bulbs in Alexa without the Sengled control hub. In Alexa you can create routines to turn lights on and off. In the SengledHome app you can create scenes. You can control your bulbs either way. Hope this is helpful.
