• We would like to let you know that there is a belt that is connected to gears with the main brushroll so that when the main brushroll spins so will the soft roller.

• Yes, it should turn on automatically, anytime that the vacuum is turned on. The speed will depend on the setting, carpet or hard floor. I have had them stop working after a while, due to not being cleaned properly and thoroughly. You will just have to replace that piece but you can buy it on the Shark/Ninja website.
