Hi David, Sometimes the door does open to it's fullest extent, the door does stay open until you shut it. No, it does not take significant force to unlatch the door. I really like this microwave!

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.When the button is pushed, the door opens 3/4's of the way on its own. With your hand you can open it the rest of the way where is stays completely open until you want to shut the door. The door opens pretty easily with the use of your thumb.
