No. You cannot mute or adjust volume on the audio out from the remote. If you feed the sound in from a computer or other device through an HDMI port you can mute or control the volume through the attached device. Not through the TV remote. TV remote WILL control sound from the headphone out jack. You should be able to run your 3.5mm cable from the headphone out jack to your external amp input and control the volume from the TV remote.
