• You don't have to purchase a plan and can just monitor yourself. However, you will not be notified if you are away. It you get a camera then the app will notify you when it sees movement, but will not keep a recording unless you pay for that service.

• Yes. You have to pay for monitoring. Thus allows a central dispatch service to be connected to both the system and the police. There are different levels of monitoring. I believe either $14.95 for basic and $24.95 for a more involved, interactive monitoring.
