“Really ignorant to tech stuff. I want to record shows and play them later on the same tv at home, like I used to do with my old vcr. I don't want to order this through Directv for a monthly fee if I can do it myself. Any help is appreciated!”

This is not a PVR or DVR. It just allows you to control them remotely. You still need a PVR/DVR solution.
