Hi, Thank you for your question. The MAG6R requires an 8-1/4-inch ceiling cutout, while the MAG8R requires a 10-1/8-inch cutout. Your existing 9-1/2-inch opening is too large for the MAG6R and would need to be enlarged for the MAG8R. I hope you found this information helpful.
