I just installed four of these on four ma6r in my basement media room Saturday. I too have no joist or insulation which made the install that much easier. At the same time my AV professional buddy told me they were a waste of money, and to really benefit you need a box built from wood. Since I had already purchased these and wasn't about to cut huge holes in my ceiling for that this i moved forward. So far they seem decent but I haven't really taken them for a full test m
