The enclosure does have a O-ring seal where it meets the speaker frame. The idea is more to reflect the sound wave - out front rather than have it dissipate behind in open air. These are premium series speakers, so some type of 'box' is needed behind to provide accurate sound projection. I wouldn't hesitate to mount them in a patio enclosure as long as not direct exposure to moisture and sunlight. I use mine for rear soundstage in my home theatre system. Extremely pleased with the sound
