“Each unit comes with a power cord. However all the pictures show the units sitting without a power cord in view. Is the unit battery powered also?”

No the speakers are not battery powered. They must be plugged in at all times. Given their size though, I’ve found it very easy to find good places for them :-)

Can't speak to the pictures, but yes, you need to plug each speaker into an outlet. No battery powered versions that I know of.
