• I have a pair of the new Play 5's and was considering adding the sub but after doing some manual adjustments and increasing the bass level on the built in EQ I don't believe I need one. For normal music listening they put out more than enough bass. I did speak with Sonos though and they confirmed that when paired with a sub the crossover levels are adjusted on the play 5's taking some pressure off the woofers and allowing them to handle more of the mid bass. I would be curious to hear it but you do not "need" the sub to enjoy great bass.

• Awesome on their own I thought. The Sonos sub takes it to whole new levels. The sub is ridiculous. No regrets here!

• I like punchy bass. Used to play bass and love that sound so yes I want a sub but my friends all say that the sound of the play5 is fine alone. It's a personal preference with me.

• The bass is pretty good. However, the answer to your question would depend on the room and size you are looking to put these in.

• My opinion is that you don't need a subwoofer. They sound amazing on their own. I have mine on a dresser near a wall and the bass is perfect. When placed higher in the room they just absolutely fill the room.

• These new Play 5's are awesome on their own. I would't purchase a subwoofer as think it would muddle the sound.

• On the old Sonos Play 5 I would want a sub-woofer, on the New Play 5 it would be good as a pair.
