Hello Matt. If you wish to upgrade you speaker system. We recommend connecting speakers with a nominal impedance of 6 ohms to 16 ohms. We also recommend using speaker wires that are anywhere between 12 to 16 gauge. These are most commonly used for connecting speakers to an amplifier or an Audio/Video (A/V) receiver. More speaker means better sound quality for movies and etc. Regards, David

Please try again later.In the quick set up guide they have various configurations of speakers if your speaker configuration is not listed I would imagine you would need to buy one center speaker and two left and right speakers. I hope that helps, you do not need surround speakers in the back. Although you can hook them up.
