The speaker system takes hdmi from your cable box/dvd/Blu-ray player and outputs the video to your tv. The audio stays with the system and chooses the right output based on your choice. It should work fine as long as you have an hdmi in to your tv. Also - if you just want vanilla 2.1 you can use the optical out from the tv to the system optical in.
