Thanks for contacting Sony, SteveP! The BRAVIA 8 remote offers two modes of operation: Bluetooth and infrared. In Bluetooth mode, you can enjoy smart features such as Google Assistant. In contrast, the infrared mode allows for basic functions like turning the TV on and off, adjusting the volume, and muting. It's important to note that the TV can also work with a third-party infrared remote, as it can receive IR signals from both the original remote and compatible third-party options. Make sure to verify that the remote you choose is compatible with your Sony TV by checking with the remote's manufacturer. Please keep in mind that while third-party remotes may work, they might lack some features available on the original remote, or certain functions may not operate correctly due to compatibility issues. If you encounter any problems while using a universal remote, please refer to our troubleshooting guide here: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00024615. Thank you for considering Sony products. Best regards, Gus, Sony North America Customer Support
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Bravia 8 series (and also the flagship Bravia 8 II series) is compatible with both the TX-920U (rechargeable USB-C) and TX-910U (premium metal, disposable battery) BT smart remotes. Both can be purchased directly from Sony’s US authorized parts and accessories vendor, Encompass. Both series are also compatible with the TX-450E (full numeric keypad) traditional IR remote, which is included as a second remote in some European markets. A genuine Sony TX-450E would need to be sourced via Ebay or another international channel, and non-Genuine versions are available in the US.
