Like the original dual shock, for gaming session 's longer than 8 hours, you'll want to have it plugged into a charging cable anyway. The controller also feels tighter, and the touch pad feels more accurate to me as well.

The controller does not need to be on to charge, however, if you are using your PC to charge the controller, the PC needs to be on. You can charge the controller using a wall outlet, a PC, or a PS4.
