“Does the MDR-Z7M2 require a DAC to operate or will it plug directly into an iPod?”

You won’t need a DAC, but these are pretty expensive for iPod usage

Phones will run it but these really need an amplifier to really sound powerful.

It will plug dorectly into any phone like device. The cans are 70mm low impedence drivers, so your phone, taet, laptop, etc will drive them without an amp. I would recomment a good dac though to bring out their personality though. A small amp wouldnt hurt but dont fet anything to powerful so you dont wither go deaf or blow the headphones drjvers out
