The remote is not necessary- you'll still be able to navigate with your controller. It is maybe a bit more convenient, especially for watching videos and movies.

It's a personal preference if you like to have specific button assignments on a tv style remote to navigate easily through media. The regular PS5 controller will be able to navigate through media as well so it's really optional.
