“If I were to purchase Call of Duty (physical copy), would my son be able to play with his friends online without Playstation Plus? Or is it required to play online point blank period? In the past it wasn't required, so just looking for clarification.”

All online games require subscription to PS Plus. You do not have to use credit card to do this when you have prepaid card. In the account settings be sure to UNCHECK AUTO AUTO RENEWAL to prevent further charges in the case that you DO HAVE credit card stored. Hope this helped.

Yes.it is required to buy a ps plus membership to play online.Back then on the ps3 you just needed internet and thats it but the Ps4 requires a membership except some few games

Playstation Plus is now a requirement for ALL multi-player game play such as Call of Duty multi-player.

If he has PS3 no need for it but if he has PS4 then he will need it to play online. Physical or digital
