“What is 5 channel stereo? This is an option on this receiver that I've never seen before. Could I hook up 4 speakers and a subwoofer, put it in that mode, and have 4.1 stereo sound?”

5.1 is 2 front speakers, 2 surround speakers, a center channel speaker and a subwoofer. If you add 2 subwoofers it would be 5.2 and you can do that with this unit if you want to. You would need to set it to 2 channel audio because without the center speaker you would lose voices or other audio intended for the center channel....just purchase a center channel speaker snd your all set!
