He has it backwards. We use 110v/60Hz. "They" use 220v/50Hz. Roughly... But yes, it may be a problem. If your dad has a step down transformer (which he obviously needs any way to use any US mains device in Europe) that has worked well for him in the past, then he should be OK. The ones designed for 60Hz that see 50Hz may be an issue, overheating and failing. So maybe a good quality European transformer is better? Why not just get him a turntable designed for that market?
