Hi Chris, Thank you for your interest in the V71. This unit does not hold a charge. It needs to be plugged into a wall outlet to power the unit. You might want to check these Sony home audio system that can be charged with built-in battery: GTK-XB90 and GTK-XB60. Hope this helps! -Jess
