Hi cecil, Thank you so much for your inquiry! No, you do not. The WH-1000XM3 Headphones can be used as a Bluetooth headphones and connect directly with your device without the need to setup the Sony Headphones Connect app. Though we recommend using the Headphones Connect app with your mobile device to fine-tune your audio, Once setup and you have selected the settings that you would like to use with the headphones, there is no need to set them up again unless the headphones was initialized. You do not- they work as standard Bluetooth headphones. The app only gives control over ANC intensity and an equalizer. You can still use active noice cancellation with the button on the earcup. Hope this helps!
