Yes, you can connect your headphone dock to the optical OUTPUT on your receiver. I have my headphone dock connected to the optical output on my TV because I do not have an audio/video receiver at this time. I do not have enough HDMI ports on my TV to use the HDMI connection on the headphone dock. I think the HDMI connection would be better than the optical connection.
