I can't answer for certain for a Sony TV. I have an older Panasonic TV with a conventional ARC port which is incompatible with the L600, as turning on the ARC channel requires viewing the video received on that port, of which there is none. I ended up using the optical sound port on the Panasonic, which is limited to 5.1 surround sound. I have no trouble listening to audio from my home theater speakers and the L600 at the same time with that configuration, but there's a noticeable lag between the speakers and the headphones. It's short enough that there isn't a perceptible lip sync delay when listening with the headphones alone, but there is a noticeable echo when listening with the headphones and with the speakers turned up. However, there's an adjustment on my home theater receiver for syncing the sound with the video, so perhaps I just need to make use of it. Perhaps of even greater significance is that the surround sound effects from the L600 make dialog more difficult to understand. There is a voice setting that turns the surround sound off and emphasizes the midrange, but that defeats the purpose of a surround sound headset. There are better products on the market if the only goal is to improve your father's ability to hear spoken dialog.
