I purchased the Sony earphones, instead of the TV Ears because the reviews were very negative about the TV Ears. Sony is obviously a better company. These work exactly as you would like them to work. You can adjust the volume on the earphones independent of the TV. In fact I turn the sound off the TV entirely and just have it coming through the earphones. So each person can set the sound level to their liking on the headset. The sound quality is definitely clearer and sharper through the headphones. The salesperson at Best Buy showed them to me and explained how to hook them up. All you need to do is plug it into the audio out jack.
