All of the FM headphones from sony are over-the-ear and quite large. I don't have any experience with using off brand FM headphones with the sony base, although they may work. You may want to visit a best buy store and discuss bluetooth headset options. Even with older tvs, there are often transmitters and adapters that plug into the audio jack or rca jacks. If this is the case, you can take your pick from any number of bluetooth compatible headsets. With advancements in technology, they really do have a model to offer at most price points.
