As long as the artwork is on something extremely thin (paper, cardstock) and is no bigger than the area of the phone I don't think that would be an issue. The case fits very snug and is quite clear, but I'm sure there would be a small amount of distortion.

I would not submerge it in water with the artwork in the case, it might be OK but if it is that valuable to whomever I would not.
