literature i've read states that the machine will use both. during normal usage the internal GPU will run to conserve battery: note that the internal GPU does in fact support 4k playback. The Nvidia GPU will be put into action under heavy usage, I would guess when required for high refresh rates for gaming.

Integrated GPUs use less power so if you are on a battery saving plan it would use the integrated and if you are on a performance power plan it would use the dedicated. When it is plugged in it should use the dedicated anyway. All laptops have integrated graphics, but not all laptops have dedicated graphics. Hope that helps.
