Hi I dont know what you mean by need 2 switches to play with your son but if my answers helps any but ill give it a shot.... So i recently purchased a switch for my family of 5 and we all use one to play any switch u buy automatically comes with 2 controllers and connection for the tv. If you feel u need more controlors then yes you may buy them seperate but not a whole other consol unless u mean literally in battle like... I havent fully explored everything about it but it is fantastic so far no complaints
