The 44 refers to the size of the watch face itself-It does come in a 40 mm or 44 mm face size
There are 44 as well as 42 i gave my wife a 44 for Christmas

The 44 watch can take old 42 bands. The 40 watch takes old 38 watch bands. They are interchangeable with their respective sizes. Apple did that so you can use any of your old 38/42 on the 40/44 watches.
