I don’t think the shelves are meant to store directly on them because they are built to convey the cold and ventilation is most likely needed. It’s better to use the basket because you can easily see what’s in them and the freezer is not meant to stay open long. I really like the baskets, they are very roomy and easy to pull in and out without having to look in the back of the shelves.
