It should be able to be used on an older tv, as long as you have a usb port in the back. You don't have to have your computer on, just wifi.

By using an adapter that coverts the connection & signal from an HDMI input to an older style RCA type input, you can covert your older equipment to accept the more modern HDMI style connector. They are available at Best Buy for about $25 to $30.00. You will receive high quality signals if the adaptor you purchase has a 1080 upgrade capability.
You will not need to have your computer turned on to use the TV if you have Wi-Fi available from your internet provider. The signal will transfer from the Wi=Fi modem directly to the Roku device.
