I started smash yesterday only to find out that you can only start with the original characters! How can I just play a regular game with ALL the characters!? null

You can unlock them when you fight against them the only thing is random to whom you play against

The characters are unlocked as you play

I think you can either scan in amiibo figures and cards or just play through the game to unlock them.

Found that out the hard way too!
You just have to play the game. Whether it be doing the solo map, or playing head to head against a friend, or solo tournaments, etc. Just play the game. Every 5-10 mintues (there is an exact number I don't know off the top of my head) you get an opportunity to fight a new character. Win the fight, and you unlock them. Google search how to fight them again if you lose. There is an option for that somewhere in the game menus.
