You can unlock them when you fight against them the only thing is random to whom you play against

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Found that out the hard way too! You just have to play the game. Whether it be doing the solo map, or playing head to head against a friend, or solo tournaments, etc. Just play the game. Every 5-10 mintues (there is an exact number I don't know off the top of my head) you get an opportunity to fight a new character. Win the fight, and you unlock them. Google search how to fight them again if you lose. There is an option for that somewhere in the game menus.
