“This might be a dumb question but can you look at your cameras "live" through your mobile app or only playback? Also, does the mobile app give alerts when motion activated?”

Yes the mobile app works best when viewing live its the default setting. If you go to the alarm setting section in the DVR you can turn on email alerts and time of day you want to recieve them also alerts can be sent to more than one address.
