• The screen (monitor) swivels, but I don't think the viewer is large enough for a child to see much. (Assume the infra-red receptor on the player can be oriented for driver operation, I find that with horizontal range, I get a field of about 160 degrees, and vertical about 50 degrees at a distance of 4 or 5 feet.)

• I don't use it in the automobile but the remote does work from a distance (about 6 feet) so it should work for you.
