Normally you would want a powered USB port for this as many external hard drives get there power from the USB drive. 

That being said, as long as you are not plugging in many things that are using the USB port to power them then it should be fine.

I don't know about multiple hard drives. I use the Targus USB splitter for flash drives, external speakers, mobile scanners, charging phones, etc., and so far it's been fine.
