If you're using basic cable, you'll have to buy a universal remote for that. If you pay for cable, they'll provide you a remote. Considering the overall low functionality of the remote, if you aren't married to using the smart TV features (which it sounds like you aren't) a universal remote would be well worth it.

But with the free smart tv remote app on your phone, all the channel selection ya need. Direct numerical entry. Plus all other controls ya need right in the palm of your hand!
