So! If I read this correctly. The picture size selected for the source input on the television is what will determine the ability of the TCL 4K television to upscale a 1080 p signal to to 4K resolution. Wow! And I thought when selecting the picture size, it was only for making sure you have the proper aspect ration for the display of the video like 16:9 or 4:3. or 1:78 to 1.

Depending on the source you may want to adjust the size of your input by going selecting the * on you remote and select picture size. Here you can change the setting to direct, stretch, zoom, auto and so on until you find the setting you prefer. -TCL US Support
