Is it necessary to purchase the optical cable? null

Not if you use HDMI-ARC from your display as your audio source. My old soundbar had optical only, I switched to HDMI when I installed this soundbar.

I did not, so I would say it is not required.

This soundbar is compatible with most TVs and can connect via HDMI ARC, Optical, AUX, or Bluetooth. This soundbar comes with an HDMI cable. If you want to connect via Optical, you would need to purchase that separately. Hope this helps! Thank you, TCL Customer Support
