“How does this work exactly? Have an older Timex clock radio I like to set the alarm so I wake to fm classical music station. Moved out to country now station barely comes in. Does it have to be attached to the clock radio itself or just placed beside it?”

it will not work on your clock radio, its a hardwired connection

Has to be attached. The antenna comes with several adapter variations to connect to devices. My suggestion is either you take your radio with you and ask the store clerk to assist to make sure there is an adapter that fits in the box! If not in the box perhaps they will have something that will make it work!

FM and AM leads need to be connected to your radio. Worked for me, pulled in a station about 60 miles away.

It must be connected to a 75 ohm coax (like a cable TV connector) or 2 wire 76 ohm connection.
