Initially, there was a plan for a multiplayer mode in Part II, something like the old Factions mode from the first game. But Naughty Dog later said that multiplayer wouldn’t be part of The Last of Us Part II itself. They intended to make a separate multiplayer-only game (often referred to in sources as The Last of Us Online) instead of including multiplayer directly in Part II. That standalone multiplayer / online mode has since been cancelled (as of late 2023).
