“Are the knobs solid metal on the inside and not cheap plastic? Want to be sure knobs hold up - current cooktop are cheap plastic and need to be continually replaced (Kennmore)”

The visible part of the knob is stainless steel. The inside is a very hard plastic with a metal insert where it connects to the base.
