• Yes, a SATA hard drive, a 3.5" or 2.5". And of course it works better (faster) if the unit is plugged into a USB3 than a USB2 port. I use this single bay unit to prep new drives, plug in a disk to be used as backup drive, and use different disks for archives (movies, music, documents).

• Yes but you must have the power cord and usb cord plugged in and the power button pressed in to read the hard drive
