You do not NEED a subscription but it doesn’t work very well without one, and though I dislike paying a monthly fee the overall experience is worth it. It connects directly to your TV by HDMI cable, and yes it does have an internal hard drive. Think of it as a DVR cable box that’s hooked to an antenna instead of cable TV.

You do have to buy a subscription but you can subscribe by the month, year, multiple years, or buy an all in package which is a lifetime subscription for that one TiVo. It does have its own hardrive already inside and it also hooks directly to your television via HDMI. I like mine a lot and as for me it’s was one of the best things for anyone who wants to cut the cord.
